I can only image how modern day news networks would be covering the devastation of Egypt during this time of plagues!
"Long lost family member returns with biting commands: Moses offers threats as staff is transformed into snake."
"Fishing industry tries to rebound after bloodbath in Nile: Analysts consulted as EPA and OSHA begin clean up process."
"Plagues take leap forward as frogs cover the land: What will become of standoff between Moses and Pharaoh."
"Not a plague: Chief advisers release statement blaming last fall's unseasonably warm weather for bumper crop of frogs."
"Frogs die, attract swarms of flies: Dead frogs can't account for multitude of gnats and flies."
"Egyptian economy reeling as possible Mad Cow Disease sweeps through livestock: Disease seemingly transmitted to all types."
"OUTBREAK: Poor health conditions taking toll on Egyptians, possible chicken pox epidemic. All travel in and out of county brought to a halt as doctors try to get disease under control."
"Goshen!: Removed valley region avoids disasters. Analysts say area protected by natural landscape"
"All Hail has broken loose! Ice claims at least 10,000 lives, death toll expected to increase as meteorologists are baffled by sudden weather anomaly."
"Egypt: A land cursed. Could there be more? Religious leaders claiming End Times have arrived"
You know these could go on and on forever. If those are the normal expected headlines, could you imagine what the National Enquirer is writing?!
God, through Joseph, had brought Egypt to a place of world dominance. The severe famine had brought all the world to dependence on the great empire. It's status at that time must have grown so much. Then God comes back and show that He is greater still. God showed the world that all the splendor, riches, and power of Egypt could be brought to ruin. He built up a nation to a place of unprecedented greatness to show the world that He was greater, that all the world might know that there is a God in Israel. What a way to make name for Yourself.
The stories told here are real life events, not even the names have been changed to protect the innocent. As you read, slow down through these chapters and just try to picture the devastation occurring. Think of the average Joe Egyptian as he lived through these events. I know I have a tendency to fly through these chapters, more concerned that I remember the order or number of plagues, but stop and think if you were living these verses. A day must have felt as a year. Questions must have been racing through your mind. What in the world was going on? What's next? Will we survive? Why is this happening?
